Sprout of Life Program – The Boys’& Girls’ Clubs Association Hong Kong

In recent years, the number of children with Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) has been rising in Hong Kong. Their social skills and self-management skills are weak. They always feel powerless when they encounter difficulties in their daily life, and parents need to spend a lot of time in their education. It will affect family relationships and children’s development when they live in a negative emotions for a long time.

However, if students do not have a formal diagnosis report, school and organizations could not provide support or treatment for them. The waiting time of treatment in public clinic is long, and the fees charged by the private clinic is very expensive. It would be difficult for low-income families to afford, and causes treatment delay for the children. In view of this, we hopes to intervene early and provide appropriate support to students with special learning needs, and explore their potential.

In 2018-19, we sponsored 25 students, who are in financial difficulties and suspected AD/HD cases, to referral psychiatrists for a special diagnostic assessment. This program also held different courses, such as sports groups, sensory integration treatment groups, social groups and inclusive activities, to improve their social skills and self-management skills. We hope that they can grow up in a healthy environment and obtain a better develop opportunities.
